Variety(ies): Folle Blanche
The Parentière “Fresh Atlantic Sea Salt” (loose translation) or Fraîcheur Iodée de L'Atlantique, is made from Gros Plant (aka Folle Blanche). Folle Blanche today is found at the western end of the Loire in the same area as Muscadet, albeit in far lesser quantity. Parentière’s Folle Blanche is grown on gabbro soils – a hard, volcanic, basalt like stone in varying shades of blue, green, and grey -- near Vallet in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine region. Domaine Parentière’s has a tiny 0.5-hectare plot of Folle Blanche with vines over 40 years old. Technically, not a vintage labeled wine, all the fruit in this bottling comes from the 2013 vintage. It was hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts, and the wine has breathtaking acidity that lends lightness alongside refreshing minerality. At 10.2% alcohol, this wine is lovely and lives us to its name with subtle aromas of sea spray, melon, citrus and wet stone. The finish shows hints of bitternut skin reflecting a hallmark of the gabbro soils. Fruits de mar, oysters, anything from the ocean, is the perfect accompaniment to this exceptional value! Drink this up over the next two to three years.
