Variety(ies): Melon de Bourgogne
The top offering from Michel and Guilhaume Ménager is this lovely Cuvée Speciale old vines Muscadet from their farm in Vallet, in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine region. They have around three hectares of Melon de Bourgogne that is all organically farmed and has been for over 30 years. The vines grow predominantly on gabbro soil, a basalt rock of volcanic origin. This particular soil lends a uniquely complex character to Melon de Bourgogne that sets is apart from wines grown on the other dominant schist and granite soils. Harvest is done completely by hand and all fermentation is achieved with indigenous yeasts. The 2013 Cuvée Speciale spent nearly 20 months on the lees in underground, glass-lined tanks prior to being bottles– about five to eight months longer than their base Muscadet – giving an even richer, fuller and complex wine. Aromas of white fruits, citrus, herbs and outstanding minerality typical of Muscadet from gabbro soils. The palate shows beautiful body with white peach, herbs, a touch of anise and “minerality for days,” and is accompanied by mouth watering acidity and a very moderate and easy to drink 11.4% alcohol. Complex, delicious and one that can certainly sit in the cellar for five to ten years.
