This is the same amazing winemaker who makes the Forty Ounce Muscadet and Forty Ounce Rose you have heard about. Only these are older vines and longer lees aged at crazy good prices.
Julien Braud hails from the small village of Monnières in the Sèvre et Maine appellation where some of the wine world’s best kept secrets abound. Julien owns just over seven hectares, with only five going into his modest production. A tiny portion of his holdings are in the recently designated appellation of Monnières-Saint Fiacre. Monnières-Saint Fiacre received its exalted status, like the other designated crus, for the quality and uniqueness of its soils. In the case of Monnières-Saint Fiacre, it is the old vines that sit on gneiss (layered, metamporhic granite if you break it down). This is amazing Muscadet with crushed seashell, white fruit, spices and a hint of herbs. Stone fruits join the chorus on the palate and there is a fine, refreshing, mineral-tinged finish. Really elegant. A stellar pairing of course with oysters, but it works gloriously with any mild fish or roast chicken. No danger stashing several of these at the back of the cellar to develop over the next ten years. Julien works entirely organically, incorporates select biodynamic approaches, uses horses in his vineyards to minimize soil compaction, hand harvests, uses only natural yeasts for fermentation after a gentle press, and ages the wines on their lees in glass-lined, underground cement vats. This wine spent over 24 months on the lees. A truly quality-minded approach has resulted in a wine of complexity, texture and balance.
