We are going a bit out on a limb on this one but after having tasted this twice, once in March and again in July, we couldn’t resist adding it to our lot of Les Roches Seches. This is 100% Chardonnay from the schistous terroir of the Les Varrens vineyard. Most of Les Varrens is planted to Chenin, but there is a tiny bit of Chardonnay. The twist that the young guns at Les Roches provide here is a wine that sees about two weeks of skin contact followed by 10 months in used oak. The result is a Chardonnay that has a touch of tannin structure that sidles up to bright medium acidity. The texture of this wine really shines. There is an interesting mélange of fruit aromas that show up here – its ripe white peach and a raspberry note. There is also a complicating (in a good way) anise element. When I mentioned this description to Thibaut, he nodded and said “peche de vigne.” I’ve never had a peche de vigne, but I did a bit of research and I’d say that it’s an apt description. Fermented with natural yeast, no filtering and no added sulfur. This wine is an opportunity to discover Chardonnay in a new way, a really good way in my opinion
