Variety(ies): Syrah, Viognier
The Prelude is predominantly Syrah from the Cote Brune with a touch of 85-year-old Cote Blonde mixed in. Vineyards in the Cote Brune, ranging from 20-40 years old, include Le Truchet, La Brosse, Leyat and Fongeant. There is also a dollop of Viognier (2%ish) in the blend for good measure. Each parcel is vinified separately and then blended prior to going into barrel. Aged for 18 months in mostly old barrique, there was only about 15% new oak in the 2016 blend. A very positive outcome as the wood takes a back seat to the rich, clear mouth-feel and crisp, clean tannins. Red fruits abound. Violets and a salty mineral note. Very precise and rich with a crescendo at the finish.
