The Syrah for Julien Pilon's l'autre rive comes from the "other bank" of the Rhone River. That is the left bank just across from Ampuis and Condrieu. The vines are over 40 years old and sit on clay and stony soils. Given that the vines sit outside of the vaunted AOC, the wine is labeled IGP Collines Rhodaniennes (formerly Vins de Pays), and sells for a fraction of what it should. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in open top stainless steel for three weeks. The wine then rests for 10 months in old barrique, never seeing any new wood. As a result, you have a wine that retains wonderful freshness along with dark red fruits, licorice, delicate herbs and floral notes. Classic Syrah. Fine tannins lend structure, texture and personality to a beautiful bottle.
