Franz Josef Gritsch, the winemaker at Gritsch Mauritiushof, embarked on his Atzberg project with several other investors nearly a decade ago. In 2007 they bought 10 hectares of the long abandoned Atzberg vineyards. He planted two of those hectares in 2007 and this is the third vintage. The Atzberg vineyard, just east of the town of Spitz in the Wachau, is extremely steep, and is unique for its intensely red soils from the high levels of iron ore. Harvested the only way it can be, manually, the wine ferments in inox and then ages in large, old 20 hectolitre barrels. Sporting insane mineral character and bright, fresh orchard fruit on the nose. On the palate there is lithe acidity, citrus character and telltale herbal/tobacco essence. Very elegant and a long, focused finish. All natural yeasts and no chaptalisation. Can be enjoyed now but has no problem resting in the cellar for five to 10 years.
