Bertrand Machard de Gramont Les Grands Chaillots Bourgogne, 2014

Variety: Pinot Noir

Lots of stars next to my notes for this wine.  The Pinot Noir for Axelle's Bourgogne rouge comes from a .5 hectare site on the east side of the RN74 (the main north/south route through the Cote d'Or) in the commune of Nuits St. Georges.  These vines are over 30 years old and sit below the premier cru site Les Poirets.  The 2014 was aged entirely in used, three to four occasion, oak barrel.  There is a meaningful amount of iron in the clay/limestone soils.  The wine is bright ruby and the aromas at the time I tasted it were soaring --dark raspberry, wild herbs, alluring floral aspects .  Fine balanced tannins, outstanding density, and a pretty, provocative finish, particularly for a wine at this level.  Get this wine on the table now.  It holds for the next three to five, but it would be a shame to miss what it's giving right now.  Less than 3000 bottles produced.  100% certified organic.
