Courbet Cuvee Violette Trousseau Cotes du Jura, 2013

Variety:  Trousseau

100% Trousseau from the oldest vines in the same vineyards from which Damien makes his “regular” Trousseau.   Damien makes only one barrel of Cuvée Violette and until now has only sold this bottling from the cellar door. There are only 500 bottles of this exceptional cuvee and we are honored and ecstatic to be able to bring it to you.

These vines are over 40 years old and grow on a mix of calcaire with grey marl and argile/clay.   The manual harvest took place October 3, 2013. Damien performs a strict sorting to ensure only the highest quality fruit makes it to fermentation and destems 100%. After over two weeks of fermentation using indigenous yeast, the wine matures in a 6-8 year old barrel for close to a year. Then it rests for six months in vat before being bottled.  The Cuvée Violette owes its name to the pronounced floral aromas it expresses and it also happens to be the name of Damien’s oldest daughter. A homage to Violette. The wine is a deep ruby and has pronounced red fruit and spice character on the nose. As it opens up with air those aromas sharpen into savory raspberry, griotte cherry and a touch of pepper. There is a depth and richness to the Violette that are superbly balanced by refined and integrated tannins and framing acidity. The Violette drinks beautifully right now and will gain complexity over the next 5-10 years.
