Etienne Calsac L'Echappee Belle Extra Brut Champagne, NV (2010)

Variety(ies):  Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

A brilliant, light gold blend of 95% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay is largely from the premier cru vineyard of Grauves in the Côte des Blancs, from the 2010 vintage. The Pinot Noir is reserve wine from the 2009 vintage. Bottled in May 2011, the wine rested on its lees until recently disgorged in March of this year. This wine receives only 2 grams/liter of dosage which lends just the right touch of balance while maintaining crisp chalky minerality, along with a hint of sea salt. Aromas of brioche, apple, pear, and a hint of fresh peach work their way onto the palate along with a fine, creamy mousse that makes this wine the total package.  And one that you can keep around for 5+ years. This wine has real cross-over capacity. It will work exceptionally well as an aperitif to pair with cold vegetables, pâtés, or creamy cheeses. But its yeasty, brioche notes allow it to make the move to the lunch or dinner table alongside entrees of shellfish, fish, such as sea bass, salmon, or halibut and white meat, like pork, veal or chicken. And don’t hesitate to bring this wine out if your moving into Asian or Indian cuisine. It should be up to the task as long as nothing is too intensely spiced.   How much more versatility do you want from a wine? Okay, I think I’d drink this with a number of pizza combinations as well. Then again, I usually think bubbles and pizza make a great match. Enjoy!
