Today, Francesco Versio’s Barbaresco estate is tiny. Two miniscule plots near Neive in Barbaresco in the southwest facing cru’s of San Cristoforo and Curra. The vines were Francesco’s grandfathers and are around 50+ years old. Until 2012, the grapes were sold by Francesco’s family. Now he’s laying claim to them.
San Cristoforo is upslope from Curra and has more limestone in the soil than the sandier Curra. As a result, you get two very different expressions from these sites. In San Cristoforo, the style is more tense with high energy and acidity. Curra, is warmer and thus more ripeness and roundness results. They come together in a nicely balanced Barbaresco.
This is an exciting start to an exciting project that we can’t wait to watch unfold. Thanks for the trust Francesco!
