Weingut Schneeweis prides itself on making honest, drinkable wines. Located in the heart of the town of Spitz, the estate has been on the rise since Florian Schneeweis took over from his parents in 2009. During that time they have doubled the size of their holdings in the Wachau from 3.5 to 7 hectares. Florian handles are aspects of the winemaking and his mother and father still work with him on a day-to-day basis in the vineyards. The vineyards run from the town of Spitz up high onto the terraced slopes of the Spitzer Graben. With the exception of one wine, the Tausendeimerberg Riesling, all of the wines at Schneeweis are fermented and aged in stainless steel tank. As a result the Gruner Veltliner and Riesling wines retain their edgy, crisp, mineral character. Florian is also a master with the Neuberger grape. When we visited him last September, there was none to be had.
