Variety(ies): Pinot Noir
These Pinot Noir vines sit just above the terraced section of Les Terrasses in the Les Vallerots vineyard. A small half-hectare that was planted over 30 years ago by Axelle's father, these older vines deliver a 2013 Les Vallerots that has a bit more serious side to it than the Les Terrasses. When I tasted the Les Vallerots in November it was showing more tannin and structure than the Les Terrasses, and it also delivered a deeper, darker, more powerful experience. Today it is in a less elegant state than the Les Terrasses, but should flesh out with time. In 2013, Axelle aged 85% of the Pinot Noir in old barrique and 15% in new barrels. I didn't detect any oak on the nose or the palate. There is a meaningful enough elevation difference between these vines and the terraced vines that Axelle generally harvests the fruit at different times. It's a highly educational and enjoyable experience to have the two wines side-by-side to understand how truly impactful the site (even only a few meters difference) is on what ends up in the glass. For me, this wine will reward being patient for a couple more years and then should drink beautifully for a decade. 100% destemmed. 100% organic.
