Variety(ies): 80% Marsanne, 20% Roussanne
A blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne from three vineyards all in the commune of Saint Peray grown on classic limestone, granite and clay on the southern end of the Northern Rhone. The first vineyard is on the lower slopes at the northern entrance to the village of Saint Peray, while the other two are further south on hillsides with southeast expositions. The difference of terroirs and exposures gives the final blend great complexity and better balance. The grapes are hand harvested and vinified separately. Once blended, les maisons de victor rests in oak barrel (20% new) for about 10 months before going into bottle. Classic orchard fruit, white blossoms and herbal tea aromas are joined by a finishing citrus note and mineral inflections. Julien has achieved the perfect balance of ripeness, freshness and finesse (albeit in a fuller bodied white) in 2017 les maisons. I can easily see drinking this wine over the next four to six years and with a bit of air it drinks great right now.
