Variety(ies): Grenache, Syrah
It’s back in stock — the new vintage of La Gramière Green Label. Amy Lillard and Matt Kling’s flagship cuvee — 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The 2014 screams Southern Rhone on the nose but without the heavy, roasted, overly-alcohol laden traits that afflicts too much of what comes from this neck of the woods. It’s aged in concrete to retain the fresh fruit character and the Southern Rhone terroir made up of sandy loam, with soft limestone and some small areas with red clay. The character of the vineyards located near the famous Pont du Gard are reflected in every bottle. Rich ruby in color with earthy and savory aromas caressing the red fruit notes. In the mouth the ’14 is more red fruited than some earlier versions. There is superb structure and balance. The grapes are handpicked by friends and family and transported in small cases to the winery. The grapes are de-stemmed and then fermented with the naturally occurring yeasts, the only additive is a small amount of sulfur. This is purity in the bottle. Nothing artificial, nothing contrived. Don’t let its modest price point fool you. This wine is contemplative and can comfortably rest in your cellar for 7+ years if that’s your predilection.
