A new offering for us from Platinetti. 90% Nebbiolo with the balance Barbera that lends a round, sweet element to the wine. The vines are over 40 years old and are located in the Ghemme hills in the Colline Novaresi DOC subregion, but are outside of the Ghemme DOCG delimited zone. Just like his Ghemme, everything is harvested by hand. In the case of this wine, harvest took place in the first week of October. Shorter maceration than the Ghemme but then the wine ages approximately 10 months in 500L Slavonian oak and another six months in the bottle. There is no evidence of the oak on this wine. It is a beautiful, smooth, medium-bodied, medium-tannin wine that has ripe cherry, cranberry, iron and a hint of licorice. A persistent finish and balanced acidity rounds it out. I found this wine to have an intellectual side that sometimes goes missing in wines of this pedigree. Presumably this comes from the complex mineral composition of the underlying alluvial soils on which these vines grow. An outstanding effort! Well stored examples should still be kicking in a decade but I see this in its sweet spot in about another year and for the next four to six.
