Another nice effort from the “ronhci” (hills) of Ghemme from our good friend Andrea Fontana at Platinetti. 2009 may have left some Nebbiolo further south a bit overstuffed or overripe, but here in the Alto Piemonte that warmth resulted in an exceptional, elegant, classically built, 100% Nebbiolo. Long, slow, month-long maceration, followed by 36 months in large, old Slavonian oak casks, and finished in bottle for nine months. Brilliant ruby red with aromas of dried roses, tobacco, iron, liquorice, dried cherry, and mint. The high acid soils on which this Nebbiolo grows provide great energy and brightness. As you should expect from Nebbiolo from Ghemme, the tannins are silky and persistent, but they have a delicateness to them. The finish on this wine is where this it truly shines -- long, sweet and finessed. As the wine sits in the glass, the aromatics continue to unfold and deepen in intensity. This wine will benefit from some time in the cellar or the decanter if you can’t resist. In my mind this wine has a nice life ahead of it and should still be drinking well in 15 years. Braised meats -- short ribs immediately spring to mind, beef stew, leg of lamb or chops, game, mushrooms, truffles, root vegetables all should be beautiful accompaniments. The Barefoot Contessa has a very easy, yet delicious and decadent recipe for Tagliarelle pasta with truffle butter http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/tagliarelle-with-truffle-butter-recipe.html -- it worked wonders alongside this and the 2008 Vigna Ronco Maso.
