Another stellar effort from AJ at Touraize in what was considered a “normal” vintage in the Jura on the heels of the low and lower yields in 2012 and 2013, respectively. As in his last vintage, a mineral edge frames this light ruby, red berry fruit, lightly spiced, middle weight Trousseau from the Les Corvées lieu-dit. These vines are over 40 years old and the depth of the material and structure reflect the maturity. The vines in Les Corvées are southwest facing on soils made up predominantly of gravel and grey marne (clay). Given the orientation of the vineyard, the manual harvest is a bit later in the season giving the grapes a chance to reach ideal ripeness while retaining freshness. The marne soil and southwest vantage point also work to preserve the acidity in this wine and give it elegant energy. All natural yeasts kick start the tank fermentation and the wine ages for 12 months in used 600L demi-muids oak barrels. Slightly more grape tannins than the ’13, but overall exceptional balance. This wine drinks beautifully now, and like we’ve heard from many of you regarding his ’13, it will be hard to keep your hands off, but well stored examples should easily continue to develop complexity over the coming decade. AJ’s favorite pairing is steak au poivre and as an accompaniment to charcuterie.
